Based on my own past attendance at the Gaza demonstrations, it's not unreasonable to suppose that a third or more of those who join in pro-Palestine and other protests or who are organizing their workplaces belong to that constituency which used to be called "fellow travellers" and "communist sympathizers". My comment was in reference to the much larger pool of 20-somethings who were polled and whose fellow travelling does not extend beyond their laptops. I noted that this was still an encouraging development, and hopefully a prelude to their with joining Mamdani and the many other Democrats breaking with the party establishment - a necessary first step if there is to be a revival of independent mass left-wing parties. Charles, alas, has it backwards; he scorns these activists as "market socialists" and Bhaskar Sunkara (and presumably his close collaborator Mamdani) as"DSA hacks" while waxing enthusiastic about the pool of younger Americans who " have a favorable view of communism " but whose struggles are limited to exchanges, often very impassioned, on social media - mirroring, I suspect, his own experience. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
