I should explain why it is more complex. First, taxis haul people around so safety is important here. Secondly, navigating the very heavy traffic in urban areas requires the vast dedication of both Operators and AI. Driverless taxis all have Operators in control rooms overseeing and overriding so-called driverless vehicles. They are not truly autonomous as they do have this override. Tesla's and other car companies for private vehicles do have such control centers but not nearly as heavily staffed as Waymo and other driverless tax companies. The constant navigation/observation by humans is a major hindrance to the bottom line of these companies and why they are pushing for less regulations...or opposing regulations that increase the human-to-driverless-vehicle ratio...with the use of AI instead of human operators.
Trucking is actually much easier. At least for what we call in the U.S. "over-the-road" long haul trucking. The scenarios, as they use in Europe, is for driverless trucks to go from inter-model yard (or large ports, airports, and trucking terminals) to other large trucking terminals: basically straight shots between these anchor points, not so much making deliveries inside cities or suburban industrial/distribution sites. As of now the AI's and remote operators have a far more simpler job than urban taxis. ALL major trucking companies are looking into this, no exceptions. In addition AI/satellite/remote operator control of container ships are also being explored with only a small engineering staff onboard.
