On some NICs, auch as the ATI 1700, the simple fact of a link light does
not prove ethernet connectivity. If there is any question on the cable, see
if a local administrator will test it for you. Perhaps someone at the
school from which you are emailing us?
Another test is to substitute it into a know working network and see if it
still works. That may annoy some users and some admins, so get permission
first. :-)
You can also borrow a card, install it into the system and see if that works.
Exactly what evidence do you have that you have a connection between the
two computers? Can you ping from each one to the other, and get back
packets, using IP addresses? If not, then you have some fundamental problem.
If you can do that with IP addresses but not host names, check your hosts
files on both machines. What is the name of your hosts file on the Windows
computer and where is it?
