That's rather odd, that gzipping the file made it work.  I don't imagine
it got much smaller after gzipping...

It does sound like some byte pattern messed things up.  Are you using
software flow control in your modem?  I would think things would work
even worse, if so.  Can you turn off the use of the escape character on
your modem?  Usually it's "+++" or something similar.  Those are the
only things that leap to mind...
