I am not aware of anything specific being worked on at the moment related to FACTS devices. However, over the next year, I plan to do some refactoring of some of the core of MATPOWER to generalize things in a way that should make modeling FACTS devices much easier. So, anyone seriously planning to work on this area may want to coordinate with me.
