The network discovery tool should work if the device is hooked up such that it should end up on the same subnet as the machine doing the scanning. Are there two lights lit on the device (red and green)? At our institution we have to whitelist MACs connecting to the wired network. Before I whitelist a device it doesn't show up in the scan because it's on a completely different network. Is your institute the same?
