Ditto what Chris said (i.e. I like it, but not for 1.3)
I think we also want to think through the details a little bit more.
Some things I'm concerned about, off the top of my head:
--the user needs to be alerted somehow to the fact that prepopulation is
happening, especially since the fields that are impacted are hidden or far down
the page.
--what happens if Series metadata is changed after the recordings are created?
Do recordings get updated or not? How do we set user expectations appropriately?
--although the prepopulations suggested probably make sense for many of us, I
fear that they may actually violate the intent of the metadata standard (e.g.
the description of the item should really NOT be the same as the series
description) We may want to refer to the work that Olaf has done:
http://opencast.jira.com/wiki/display/MH/Matterhorn+metadata+scheme+%28work+in+progress%29
--there are other less-direct pre-populations that some might find useful. e.g.
here at UCB, our admikn users want the episode "Presenter" to be prepopulated
by the Series Organizer, as they use the Organizer field as a place to enter
the course's primary instructor's name. (Okay, we probably don't want to worry
about this as part of MH-8571 since it's beyond the intent of this ticket, but
I'm bringing it up here as it's relevant to the concept of prepopulation in
general.)

p.s. Some related discussion in MH-3413 (As an administrator, I need to have
metadata prepopulated or inherited from Series to individual recordings)
