Perhaps it would be a good thing that certain metadata items could be inherited from the Series *but* that was reflected as an "special state" of metadata, which you could override in a per-item basis. I'm thinking of, for instance, have an item "description" be a reference to its series "description" (I know this shouldn't be, it's an example, play along a little :P), so that, if the series description changes, we do not have to worry about changing it in every single element.
The UI should reflect the actual value AND an indication that it's inherited from the series value, and let the user override it so that it becomes not a reference, but a value specific to the item itself, and not the series it belongs to. Do you know if there's some standard about metadata "inheritance"? Does that sound reasonable? I'm sorry if the explanation is not so good, I sometimes have "bad English" days. I hope I made myself clear enough, tough.
