Greg,

Yes, that's the file, and it does work, as long as you don't check archive. I've been using this captions file successfully with Matterhorn for over a year, when that video was first published. I believe it's the standard DFXP format that Matterhorn requires.

But note that you can't upload that as part of the multi-file upload due to http://opencast.jira.com/browse/MH-9045. You have to upload, check the hold for "Captions file upload", then add the captions file after it's on hold.

Should've thought of that. Just added a video and caption file to

Is that file the actual one you're using? I see a 'the captions file
could not be added." message with or without the archive option, and a
"ERROR (IngestRestService:889) - Premature end of file." in the logs.
Also, my xml parsing program (xml_pp) barfs saying it's malformed.
Perhaps this is the source of your problems? Looks like the apostrophe
character in

"<p begin="0:00:19.960" end="0:00:24.619">the recording to support
learning.<br />Let's take a look at a typical scenario</p>"

is the issue.

Here's some additional information I've discovered: it appears that the
captions are working, as long as I don't check "Archive" when uploading
the file. I've been getting very consistent results - if I check
"Archive", the captions will not display in the Engage player. If I
don't check "Archive", they appear just as they should.

I hope that helps someone debug, because I'd hate to have to choose
between archiving and captions!
For those of us without valid captions files, could you attach one to
the ticket that you know works for us to test with?

Thanks!

After doing quite a bit of testing to confirm, this morning I filed
http://opencast.jira.com/browse/MH-9351 : Captions broken. Basically,
captions do not appear in the Engage player, in any browser.

I'm certain this is a regression. I know that I've tested captions at
some point in 1.4 and it worked, but I'm sorry I cannot confirm when
that was. I know because I had to confirm for our pilot that there was
a workaround to http://opencast.jira.com/browse/MH-9045, which is to
upload captions when on hold.

This is a critical blocker for UC Berkeley for our pilot planned for
the Spring semester that starts Jan 22nd. The pilot will include
around 1,000 students, so the chances are very high that we will be
required to provide closed captioning in these recordings. If the
player is not able to display captions, we will not be able to use
Engage in our pilot.

Our developers have little to no experience working in the Engage
player. I imagine many of you are heading out for winter break, but
I'm sending this out as a plea to anyone who can find time to look
into (and hopefully resolve!) this bug in the next couple of weeks. If
you are able to assist, we would be deeply indebted.

Thank you!
Michelle
