384 will be plenty. I used to have 160MB in my beige G3 and
YDL was quite happy with that -- very rarely hitting the swap
partition. I now have 416MB in it, just because 256MB SDRAM
was really cheap last year... might come in handy if I put
OSX on it, too.

One thing that will really make a difference is to replace the
huge desktop systems (KDE & Gnome) with a mid-level window
manager like AfterStep. First time I installed YDL 2.2 and
AfterStep, it felt so fast it made my eyes water. :-)
