        Debian is a distribution that is oriented towards stability and 
ease of administration.  I don't know how it fares as a desktop, but 
then I've been using Unix since 1984 and administering it since 1989, 
so I wouldn't tend to be too concerned about that.

        For desktop uses, I'd definitely pick MacOS X (and have done so). 
Failing that, I'd probably go with FreeBSD, not because it makes such 
a great desktop but more because I already know it reasonably well 
and it has the "Linuxlator" mode which allows it to run most Linux 
binaries out of the box (that is, if there were any Linux binaries I 
cared/needed to run).

        If not FreeBSD, then probably OpenBSD (for security).  If not 
OpenBSD, then NetBSD.  If not NetBSD, then I'm not sure what -- but 
if it had to be Linux, it would probably be Debian.
