At the command line, after logging in with text mode, type
switchdesk gnome
Or, if you use the problematic GUI login, you will likely want to
change the runlevel from 5 to 3 in /etc/inittab at the line towards
the bottom:

id:5:initdefault:

It's not KDE that is the problem, it's the GUI login that is screwed
up, disabling the mouse. Use the right mouse button (or the F12 key
for single-button mice) to invoke the popup menu on the desktop,
choosing "Run Command" and "Options" to be able to, as root, edit
/etc/inittab with kedit, for example--navigating with the keyboard.

Hope this helps, and that I understand your problem correctly--

Ken
