I used to dual-boot a beige G3/266 with a 4GB drive, so it's certainly
possible to keep two fairly complete systems on a drive that size. I
gave Linux 1.5GB and the rest to MacOS, and created a plain HFS (not HFS+)
partition that both systems could access. If it's not your "daily rig,"
4GB should be plenty of room.

I'm not 100% sure that you *have* to use BootX with that system. I
think there's some OF fiddling that you can do to boot directly to
Linux, and there are schemes like yaboot that require a bare minimum
MacOS partition, basically enough to get the system going before
passing control to the Linux kernel.
I've seen NetBSD running on a beige G3, so I know it's possible to
completely bypass MacOS on a system of that vintage. If you prefer
Linux, YellowDog or Debian should do the job.
