and Asante has their AsanteTalk.
I've used the AsantePrint, it worked fine. There is a Mac OS 7/8/9 program that administers it, so you'll need something to run that program. I don't use it but still have it.
BSD and Linux shouldn't have to know anything about AppleTalk to print using a bridge, right? Communication protocols are a bit beyond my bailiwick. Any help appreciated.
Um, yes they will. Your printer only understands PAP (Printer Access Protocol), so that's how systems will have to talk to it. The AsantePrint only routes AppleTalk (PAP and AFP), so a Linux or BSD machine that only talks TCP/IP won't see the printer. If you need something to route both AppleTalk _and_ TCP/IP between EtherNet and LocalTalk cabling, you will need something like a GatorBox by Cayman Systems (I've used one one those). That won't do you any good unless your printer understands TCP/IP (and LPR/LPD) too.
Modern (not necessarily new) HP's will talk to just about everything even if connected via LocalTalk. That's why I have standardized on HP LaserJets.
