I actually think that Flickr is a great way to share photos. You can
definitely lock down images that you do not want available to the public by
only allowing contacts and friends (whom you would have to invite) to view
the photos. 

Also, once a photo is uploaded to Flickr, it saves it in different sizes.
There is an "All sizes" button above the uploaded image that gives users the
option to download the original (generally the largest with highest
resolution) or various others. 

If you decide to go with Flickr, you might also consider making some of the
museum's images available to the public to engage current and potential
visitors.

I have not used it for work storage or sharing,, I do think you can lock 
down files from general viewing.(good point)
But I think since flickr whacks down the size of photo files to match their 
specs,, I think they would not be good for press.
