Hi Peter, The digitization unit of the University of Virginia special collections library uses Microsoft Expression Media, formerly known as iView, to manage their images. You can record metadata about each item. The great thing about this software is you can export to iView's proprietary XML exchange format, which, in turn, allows you to transform it into VRA Core/CDWA/whatever with an XSLT stylesheet or just use XSLT to re-arrange the data in such a way that allows it to be ingested into a database.
You can also do batch renaming and batch export of deliverables with the software, but sometimes that's actually faster/easier to do with a simple shell script if you are using Mac OS or Linux. If you are interested in learning more about the software is used by the department, I can refer you to their production manager who can answer any questions you may have better than I can.
