On the Aiwa AM-F70 (would someone with a Sharp portable please test the
comparable operation on it? thanks) I can insert a disc, start and pause
play at the beginning of track 1, and then press REW to get immediately
to the beginning of the last track (or keep pressing REW to go to the
second-to-last, third-to-last, etc.), all without the annoyance and risks
of END SEARCH.

[That doesn't work on my MZ-R3, but it has manual END SEARCH, so one can do
it as Kade described.]

On Sony decks, one can turn the AMS knob left (or press |<< on the remote)
when the deck is stopped and position to the start of the last track, then
the second-to-last, and so on, again without the downsides of END SEARCH.

So one can have rapid search to the last track during playback without
needing to put up with manual END SEARCH during recording, even on a
portable. It's not a both-or-neither situation at all.

Then again, the phrase "like a tape" makes me wonder whether the comment
was serious.

Agreed.
