Sir, you seem a little confused. The "line out" on a portable MD is strictly
ANALOG. At the current time there are no portables I am aware of being sold
that have a digital output.
All portable units being sold for the past several years that have a separate
line out and headphone jack are both analog.
Besides on portable CD units that feature both digital and analog output, they
share the same mini jack. When Sony introduced the portable MD they
originally offered it with a jack that was designed to use the standard 3
conductor analog output (the ground is shared) and also doubled as an digital
optical jack.
This design is still used in portable CD players today.
I hope that I clarified that for you. Often in my attempts to do so I only
tend to confuse people more.
Take care,
LAS
