I think that is 100% accurate.

The battery drain theory has pasted my mind also. But look at all of the portable
CD players that have an optical out and very long playing time (on 2 AA NiMH
batteries!).
Besides if battery drain was the problem, they could have a switch which said
"Digital-Analog". By switching to analog you would turn the LCD off.
In light of how many people have requested a portable MD recorder/player with a
digital output, it is obvious that for some reason the manufactures have
intentionally chosen to ignore the consumer's request.
If the original MZ-1 could fit all of it's features into a unit the size of the
R50 with updated battery support and electronics, that would be one heck of a
recorder (except no remote).
I have still never gotten a chance to try recording something on a new MD recorder
and playing it back on the MZ-1 to see how critical ATRAC version is on play back.
