I'm a bit late to the discussion here... but here goes...

Why is everyone so tied to SolBook? Lets assume that the editing is done in
some Wiki (the actual Wiki is not important just yet). That Wiki version
becomes the source. If we can output reasonably formatted PDFs (or at least
ODT) from that Wiki what purpose does SolBook serve? Is SolBook not simply an
XML input format plus a work flow that results in a published HTML and PDF
version of the documents? If the Wiki is providing this... why the need to
export to SolBook? What are we gaining by sticking with SolBook on the
Wikified books?

The OpenOffice.org docs are fast moving over to Wiki (they were never SolBook
though). We are planning (at this point) to use a Wiki as the only editing and
collaboration tool. We did some initial tinkering with this, and the results
have been very good. The people doing the contributions are quite happy with
the move to Wiki, and we are getting an increasing number of people editing the
OOo docs now that they are starting to appear in Wiki format... much more input
than we had historically.

There is an issue with getting a published book out of the Wiki, but we are
closing in on a solution. We have some volunteers we found at FOSS.IN who
think they can get a PDF or ODT out of the Wiki fairly easily. Hopefully there
will be some examples soon.

There are other bumps along the way of course, but... well someone has to be
first.
