Title: Magic 5.5 SR1: BMV NDC number question
|
Hi Michelle- I’m not sure where to start…all
NDC numbers follow a very specific format, regardless of the manufacture. They
are 11 digits, all in a 5-4-2 sequence.
The first five numbers are the manufacture, the middle four numbers are
the drug, and the last two are the package. For example, when the user is at the
beside going to scan a package they don’t care who the manufacture was
(the first 5 #’s) and they don’t care if it came from a bottle of
500 or a unit-dose pack (the last 2 #’s), they care that it’s Furosemide 40mg Tab (the middle 4 #’s)…or
whatever. Now here’s the wrinkle – some older
NDC’s had a format of 4-4-2, and some NDC’s you’ll see only
have 3 numbers in the middle ending up as 5-3-2. On that last example you might be adding
a zero in front of the 3 numbers for some billing adjudication, but for the
most part leaving it as 5-3-2 is OK, and most likely no one here is changing
those. I have implemented BMV several times in
both Magic and CS, and have sat through those MT calls, but this is the first
time I’ve heard of moving NDC’s and a “master list”. To my knowledge, and I would like to
hear different it that’s the case, you’re on the right track –
what needs to happen is for you to scan your Pharmacy Department and “attach”
those items that come up Not Found in the Quick Add functionality. Once your entire department is attached
to the right entries, it’s critical moving forward that ALL items coming
in the order on a daily basis get scanned as well to ensure they are correctly
attached…even if they are the same item you’ve purchased in the
past, the NDC’s can change. Best of luck – Kevin. PS – For the record, this obviously
pertains to US NDC’s – Canadian DIN’s
are a totally different issue. From:

L: We
have had our first conference call with Meditech about BMV. We were talking
about NDC numbers, and they said that there was one “master”
NDC number for a drug that had 11 digits, and that all the
manufacturer’s NDC numbers were only 10 digits. We then
would need to update all of our NDC numbers to this master one, and add all the
manufacturer numbers to the ALT NDC number field. Since
I am relatively new to the field, I thought I understood that the NDC
number was different for each manufacturer, and that you didn’t need to
change all the NDC numbers in the drug dictionary – just
use
the one you use/buy most often, and add the other numbers to the ALT NDC number
field. I even have an algorithm that someone sent from the
L, about how to change a 10 digit number to an 11 digit one. Can
someone shed some light on this for us? Do we need to get started with updating
our NDC numbers? Where do we find this master list??? Thanks
