We currently have both COWS on every floor and Wall Mounts with PC's in
our semi-private rooms. We have had the same complaints about the COWS
that Sharon stated. The laptops are constantly malfunctioning (they
just arent made to run 24/7!) and pushing the carts around and over the
threshholds. We have enough COWS for every nurse to have one if the
floor is at maximum capacity, but if one goes down..that leaves someone
sharing. I had one floor director get feedback from the floor nurses
as to which they preferred to use, the COWS or the Wall Mounts.
Probably 85% said the Wall mounted PC was their preference. You would
still have to keep a few COWS on hand so that the nurse is not forced to
document in the room if there was a lot of family or a very
talkative/needy patient in the room.

Ed, I recently saw a hospital that uses a laptop affixed to a med cart
with a hardwired scanner. This is not very popular with the nurses for a
variety of reasons, from not having enough carts, to what seemed to be
constantly malfunctioning laptops, to the problem of trying to move the
large cart around the patient room. The nurses even dislike the noise
the cart makes when it rolls over the threshold at the door to the room.
In addition, having the meds outside the room seems to be a factor in
the development of incorrect medication preparation and scanning
processes by nurses. This hospital does not have automated dispensing.
They are now considering putting med drawers and PCs in the room with
wireless scanners. Sharon

Subject: [MEDITECH-L] COWs vs. PCs in the room for BMV

Hi,

I wondered if anyone has any thoughts about using COWs vs. PCs in
the room for BMV? We have purchased COWs which gives us the mobile
option. I was wondering if other BMV sites prefer having PCs in the
patient room for BMV?

Thanks,

Ed
