For the meta-project I'm coordinating [1] I had been using both, butrelying onthe forum as the default. This is because in our case there has been much, much higher engagement on the forum lately. In fact in many cases appeals to the mailing list brought zero responses but at least 1 or 2 in the forum (I still intend to engage the mailing lists periodically though). So maybe there needs to be a policy for MeeGo official activity (I would prefer the forums but that's just how I roll) but then for community initiatives let us work out what works best on a case by case basis?
