I had this problem at the times when I was still using my previous
laptop which had ATI (nowadays
unsupported Radeon model), I had difficulties running anything OpenGL
without problems in Linux,
but I thought that newer ATI cards would be better working. I was
using Clutter so it was
quite critical for getting the GL working because it was pretty nasty
to not be able to run application
because it was crashing because of a driver problem. I sort of gave up
in around 2008 and have been since using
nVidia and have never had since then any problems with the combination
of Ubuntu + nVidia
binary drivers supplied by Ubuntu, with either GL via Qt/Graphics view
or with Clutter - it has been working and still
works.

Best Regards,
