Brendan,
Thanks for that. Yeah I found that straight away. I have solved the problem. It would appear as though the car had a reconditioned auto gearbox installed at some stage in its life. Looking at the back of the crank where the bush is to fit, there was a stack of junk including some metal filings. I cleaned that out and made sure the crank was within spec (I knew that Vernier would com in handy) and thankfully it is. Got my spiggot bush, oiled it up and weeeeeeeee in it went.
I then broke down and cried. Thanks for all the help with this.
Regards
Michael Foreshew

Michael,
This happened to a friend of mine. You mentioned it was an
automatic-to-manual conversion. A pilot bushing (spiggot) should never be
that hard to install. The automatic cranks have a small, round flex plate
adapter that just slips on the back of the crank. If you didn't look twice,
you would think it was just the rear crank flange. It's only slightly
larger than the back of the crank. It will also prevent you from ever
inserting a bushing into that crank. Look behind the flywheel (if you've
already mounted it) and try to spot a "lip" between the crank and flywheel.
If you see it, pull the flywheel and slip off that adapter. Your bushing
should fit fine, then.

Brendan
