Chris,
Malcolm is on the money, you have described to a tee the classic symptoms of a
partially blocked radiator and you wont fix it any other way than a full strip
down, system flush, fit the thermostat (either) and the correct proportion of
an A grade coolant. The only difference a cooler thermostat makes is it takes a
tad longer to get hot - btw how hot is hot; you can run a L powered 510 all day
on the track with a 253 Torana thermostat at 210F and not hurt a thing -
problem is around town with stop/start stuff you can't run much past 195F ("P"
on 70+ dash) as you will suffer from vapour locks and detonation etc. as the
under bonnet temps get up out of control.
