Diarmuid,
when I was running a standard carb I found turning the key and staying off the
pedals was the go ( no choke fitted ) and blipping the throttle as it starts
to fire.
SUs seem to like it colder the better, just turn the key and vroom - smooth
idle straight away.
One thing I have noticed is that running leaded gas ( or LRP ) with the SUs
makes it start like I mentioned above, but in the last week I've been using
PULP, and the bugger won't start from cold without judicious use of the right
foot, really chugs and splutters for a few seconds before it fires on all 4.
I've found running less than the factory static ignition advance doesn't help
starting either, best around 10-14deg.
