Thought I might contribute some of my opinions to the list:
I am in the computer hardware business and it is undoubtedly obvious that
with the introduction of GST and scrapping of the 22% sales tax that most
hardware items have dropped dramatically... some as much as 12% (not all
items attract exactly 22%). It is ridiculous that prices have gone up and
not down
The situation may be one of the following three things:
Firstly an most probably: That places that import these items weren't paying
sales tax in the first place due to an item most commonly known as CASH???
Why is there always a difference between a CASH price and any oher form of
money transfer. Where people were paying a 22% sales tax ammount on items
this may/maynot have been accounted for by the seller. THEREFORE now that a
10% GST tax applies the importers are basically in the same situation as
they were prior to the introduction on GST though now everything has an
extra 10% GST tax applied to it which is unavoidable.
Secondly: Pre-GST stock where sales tax has already been paid and money does
not want to be lost by seller, will attach an extra 10%. Until all old stock
is sold you probably won't find anything to be a great deal cheaper. (even
though the government is suppose to refund all sales tax paid prior to GST
on selling of items currently in stock)
Thirdly: The Australian dollar sucks against most of the other currencies at
the moment though you will find that most businesses such as SSS only
purchase when the dollar is good and shipments normally come in every 6
weeks. I think most of the scenarios above have more to do with the money in
the pocket rather than external influences.
That's my opinion anyway,
Anthony
