Chris,
The dual master cylinder is a safety item and yes the lines are separate
systems for front and rear brake circuits. This means if you blow a rear
wheel cylinder (drum brake) the fluid is supposed to drain from one cylinder
only. In a single system if this happens, guess what? Fred Flintstone to the
rescue.
I just thought of a safety issue and that is not all dual master cylinders
have the front brake line nearest to the firewall so make sure you know
which is which before you connect things up, especially on other makes than
a Datsun. Some PBR units have the lines a about face (eg AMI Toyotas).
On the safety light thing, the inbuilt switch was very fluky as when you
bled only one circuit the damn thing would shift in the cylinder and
activate the light and these things were a nightmare to get repositioned in
the centre. You had to bleed both circuits an hope. Nissan replaced this
idea in the 180B SSS with a fluid level plunger in each reservoir and you
can tell if you have these by the wires attached to the reservoir caps. Most
cars still use some variant of this system today. If this frigs up you only
have to buy a new cap.
regards
Terry

rick, my dato ('71) has dual reservoirs - well did have before I pulled them
out. As far as I know, the second was a safety unit, so where the first
fails, the second can pull the car to a halt safely, but I'm not saying that
they are for the front and back seperately, just saying what I heard. It is
also written in the gregories manual like that. The 180B booster has no
warning light leads coming off it as I know it (3/4"), where the 240K (7/8")
has the leads for the light. Maybe the model of 180B I have it different to
the majority, or maybe the wires were already taken out when I got them - I
don't know. Both 180B and 240K's have dual reserviors though.
