- Ideas
From what I understand, the NISMO strut tops look like
a good idea.
Each strut top consist of a circular plate and a
bearing cap, probably using about 5mm thick alloy, with a stepped boss
machined to accept a deep-groove anti-friction (ball) bearing.
The plates go together like a sandwich with the bearing
in-between.
The top plate has a number of holes around the
circumference, the strut top bearing is located off-centre on
the plate. So by rotating the strut top the suspension axis moves closer
or further away from the vehicle centre-line. I.e. more or less
camber.
If you need more camber you just undo the bolts and
rotate the strut top until the next holes line up and bolt it up
again.
Advantages - 1 Cheap to make. 2 Will not lose setting when
driven hard as per slotted hole strut tops. 3 Factory tested, developed and
approved idea. 4. More precise suspension control. 5 Looks less
aggressive/obvious than slotted strut tops.
Disadvantages - 1 Caster not independent of camber.
2 In reality it might involve a lot of suspension disassembly
to change camber.
I don't know how much CNC machining costs but I think that
this type of Strut Top would be a good proposition for limited
production.
Errol?
Regards,
Nick.

Bugger
I just replied to you Wardy along this vein.
As I stated though, I fully agree with you - there is a
right way and a wrong way and I think for the extra $$$ proper engineering
is the only safe alternative.
There is probably a good business incentive out there for
someone with a bit of nouseand in the business (like Errol for example)
to sell proper engineered wares through the web, if only to ensure that
dodgy ideas don't wind up on the road next to you and I. My 15 years
of working on racing machines has led me to believe that if you do it right
first time it is worth the wait and extra $$$, as you can confidently drive
to the limit without endangering yourself or others.

I am to be corrected,
this link was not from Brad, but CP. So I take back any inference
that Brad was involved in modifying strut tops.
Apologies,
Mark Ward
C.P., please don't
take this personally, I do admire the ingenuity of your idea, but it seems pretty shonky to me.
I fully believe in freedom of information, ideas and expression of them,
particularly on the internet.
But putting a dummy bolt in, for goodness
sake. The engineers at Nissan didn't put three bolts in the mount
for the sake of it. Sound enginnering principles were adhered
to and obviously three bolts are used for a
reason. Further suggesting that you might need to superglue the
plastic covers down to stop people looking under them only re-enforces the
shonkiness of the excercise.
I would suggest that doing it right the first
time and getting it enginnered (ie camber kits, factory offset strut tops
etc) removes the legal problems associated with it, and the fact that if
something does break, it won't be on your head.
Particularly if you crash and kill someone.

Try this. Something I just whipped
up....Might be of some use....not adjustable but real cheap to
make
Click on the suspension mods
link....
if cant view it go here
instead
