Zac,
For a lighter pedal, use the throttle return springs that are wound like a
clock spring. They allow for spring tension adjustment as they fit on to
clamps over the throttle butterfly shaft. The inner end is attached onto the
shaft clamp, the outer end is attached to the body of the carb. As you open
the throttle , the spring winds up by twisting as opposed to stretching out
like an SU type return spring does.
Rotating the attachment clamp on the butterfly shaft allows you to adjust
the spring pretension and get the right pedal pressure to suit you. These
springs operate by twisting torque and put almost no side load on the
throttle shaft bushes , so your bushes dont wear out as quickly either.
