You can just get a whole new collapsable steering column and steering box
out of a later model datsun or a 180b I believe. Much safer than the
original spear too.

I just did this conversion not too long ago and yes the spear is a bit of a
pain to get out, but not too bad.  You will also need to get a new indicator
assembly as the older ones are too small to fit over the newer column.
