Subject: SR20 goes!!
Date: Monday, September 04, 2000 10:21

Hi everybody,

I have some wonderful news. I finally after 3 long months of working every
weekend and every night, got my SR20det running in my bluebird TRX. What a
rewarding experience!!! First kicked over at 9:30 on Saturday morning!

I finally figured out that the timing was out by 45 degrees on the crank
angle sensor, and the number 1 coil wasn't firing, so I joined the computer
output 1 and 4 together so they would fire simultaneously. This is how my
first drive went:

Engine kicks over, blows shitloads of smoke out the exhaust and for about 5
minutes, the cabin was full of smoke, there was smoke coming off the engine
from all the cleaning solvents and fingerprints burning away. Engine won't
sit on idle though.. Bummer!!

Pull out onto the street and drive 50 yards to the end of the street. Very
drivable at low speeds. Some HOT engines I've driven are really crappy low
down, this was smooth as a kitten's fur and purred just as nicely!!! Sit at
end of the street and wait for a clean break in traffic....

Pull out onto the main road, long stretch of road ahead... Slowly wind
engine up to about 2000rpm... Then boot the throttle flat to the floor,
turbo goes "ssssssshhhhhhhhSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT"
My head gets pulled back from the g-force engine hits 4000rpm in less than
1/10th of a second, back of the car squats a bit and then jumps like a frog
as the engine hits 5000rpm and still winding up... This thing was pulling
so
hard that my vision went blurry, then my head hit the headrest. I was just
sitting there going AAAAAAHHHHHHHH
FAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!... Push clutch down... BOV
goes "pf.pf.pfpf.pf.pf.pf.pf.pf" in the most beautiful flutter I've ever
heard... Pull her into second gear, boot it and the back of the car jumps a
bit to the side, pulls back straight and leaps like a frog again..Bluury
vision as my eyes get pulled to the back of my sockets, Speedo needle
hadn't seen this much excitement in all it's life... Hits something between
70 and 90 in second gear, and then driver's hands were too sweaty to
continue so pulls car into service station for it's first drink of Aussie
Unleaded!!

I swear guys, I have NEVER driven a faster car in all my life. I drove a 97
model WRX a few years back, and that was quite fun, but this bluebird is
totally balls out wicked. I was shaking when I hopped out of it at the
servo, had trouble putting the fuel nozzle in the hole!!

Anybody thinking of doing the conversion... My advice is.. JUST DO IT!! I
had high expectations... and I am absolutely blown away with this motor..
It
is truly something to behold!!! I have trouble describing it..

It probably sounds like I'm a bit excited, so I apologise to anybody who
thinks I'm a nutter. But if you haven't driven a car with a SR20 in, you
gotta try it... It really is an experience never to miss!!!
