Thanks Terry
I am spending a lot of time and effort to make sure I build it as well as I
possibly can for both max power, driveability, and reliability. I figure
that way I only have to maintain it, not continually enhance it.
Problem is, I will probably run out of talent before it runs out of power!!!
People have hung a lot of shit on me for the money I have spent on this 30
year old car, and continually I am asked why I don't build a turbo 4wd as
you can get an import VR4 for $8000. My answer is this, I have spent $9000
on the Datto so far, that includes all the bits from Datrats, bullet-proof
stroked bottom end, new steel cage built to my specs (more of a space frame
than a cage), Willwood pedal box, new Velo Esprit seat, Sparco six point
harness, and a few other bits and piece. By the time the car is finished I
expect to have spent $12000.
To build a VR4 to the same level of safety and reliability would cost me
over $30000. it would be faster, but less fun, and I would be dearer to
maintain. i know this as my good mate Ian WRIGHT built one and ran the Qld
Rally Championship last year coming 2nd to a very slow driver in a very fast
Evo 5.
I will stick to the old Datto I reckon.

Brad,
It sounds like a great purchase and I wish you every success in PRC with it.

You should see the work Errol had done to the head before I bought it from
him. It is nearly brand new - even had the aluminium normalized so it hasn't
softened!

What do you mean the crank, the whole bleeding Z24 is a nightmare - how do
you say caboom at 5000 rpm 1/2 way thru the second stage if your lucky.
Z22's seem to be much more reliable from what I hear.
btw where do you get a FIA head for a Z24 from - maybe made for the US boys.
FIA heads were very exy and cash up front in the 70's, so $2800 is a good
price - very cheap hp for a na L20B/L18 especially if you can put the bottom
together yourself. I wish I had kept a few fia's in the track bag for having
fun in 2000.

Subject: Z24 bottom end???
hello all,
I am still wondering on what bottom end to use for a late model FIA
head, it was designed for a 2.4L so i think i will go for a 2.4L...is the
whole Z24 bottom end the best combo for it??? or something a L20 with the
Z24 crank,or etc etc.....can anybody please advise me on what would be the
best????....i would like torque and revs.
thanks in advance
Cameron
