I think you have spelt out why rallying has dropped off the agenda for the
average motorsport minded person.
Thirty years ago Rallying and Hillclimbing were what every young car
enthusiast did with your road car on the weekend. Then in the eighties
along came Group G rally supercars with 4WD, this doubled/quadrupled? the
cost of rallying.
So now its historic rallying, relay racing or hillclimbing that are Joe
Average's motorsport hobby. The cars haven't changed in thirty years in all
these areas of motor sport.
