Subject: Re: Electronic ignitionList,1.Were there any A series engines that came from the factory with electronic ignition ? Can these dizzy's be easily swapped onto a 120y A12 ? If not, I'll go for a jaycar ignition kit.Yes, but I don't think Aus got them - the US boys get the good bits again. You could be lucky with a Pulsar A15 but I'm not sure, maybe an importer could give you some info.
2. Also, does anyone know the specs of a 1200GX head? do they swap straight onto an stock A12 ?
Yes, the heads are a straight swap and it only takes about an hour to change the head gasket in one of these, they were prone to blowing standard head gaskets until we paid the money for a decent one and no more trouble in this area - it was in a rally car and shown no mercy.I started with the stockish 1200 engine in the car, I was my first real car and I went looking for horsepower; changed to a 1000 head and then to a 1200GX head and then progressed to an imported 1400GX engine which was seriously quick in a 1200 back in the early 70's (1600 killer and they didn't like it much hehe) The GX heads were larger in the ports (can't remember exact size but ~38 mm) and the valves are a fairly decent size for a small engine (In 38mm Ex 29mm, Std 1200 were 35 mm and 29 mm). With 2x40 mm Mikuni or Weber this engine really got a huge boost with a decent tuned length header (genie or sonic we used) and it revved to 7000+ all day and didn't sound half bad either. They also came with Hitachi sidedraft and really were a nice engine in there day. We put the 1200GX head with 2x40mm DCOE on the 1400 block and that was a very low cost potent machine in it's day ~140hp, yeah I know pretty tame these days but in '73 it was fun beating hoon machines of the day and we could even match them in top speed as it would pull nearly 7000 in 4th, no fifth gears then - would have been fun if they did have them, second thoughts it would have been dangerous.Terry
Thanks,
James.
