There isn't a lot of room between the wheel well and the cross member, about 1" or so but the diff will drop enough to slide it past - sounds like you had some fun with it though. The car was up on axle stands with the shocks and springs taken out so there was plenty of room. I think it might have been rear ended and only been partially fixed. Is the spare wheel well supposed to be hard up against the crossways chassis rail?
