There isn't a lot of room between the wheel well and the cross member, about
1" or so but the diff will drop enough to slide it past - sounds like you
had some fun with it though.

No there was definitely about 100mm missing from the length between the
hole in the crossmemeber and the spare wheel well.  And I have the hammer
marks to prove it.   The car was up on axle stands with the shocks and
springs taken out so there was plenty of room.  I think it might have been
rear ended and only been partially fixed.  Is the spare wheel well supposed
to be hard up against the crossways chassis rail?
