>From what I hear there are problems with differing quality of LPG
available, so your never know what mix you get. My brother runs his HQ
Holden on gas an has noticed the problem with different batches of fuel.
I was speaking to an ex EPA guy who said the govenment had told them to
investigate swithing the whole Vic fleet to gas using the straight gas
Falcons etc. I was browsing through the Ford literature he had on the
performance of them, it showed similar power up to 3000rpm and then a
constant taper off compared to the pertol. I put this down to the pertol
having poor mixing capabilities at low rpm improving as engine speed and
turbulence increases compared to LPG. The Ford engines are supposedly
modified for LPG, to what extent I dont know. However because of the
lower specifc heat energy rating of gas you need to use more to generate
the same power(richer). The advantage it has, is being a gas, mixing is
improved for cleaner combustion and generally a higher octane allowing
higher cylinder pressures before pre-ignition sets in. This allows
higher compression or more boost to be run. One problem I see with gas
is throttle response and metering of the gas. With petrol the injectors
supply additional fuel when you plant your foot richening the mixture
much faster for better engine response. With carbies you get the
acceleration pump that does the same thing. As far as I know LPG systems
dont have this. I did read about a company that was developing a gas
injection system a while back.
Another thing to consider is if you run out of gas on a dedicated gas
system you need a tow truck!
I am very interested in some of the alternate fuel systems that are
slowly appearing, I'm not talking electic hybrid cars here. My ultimate
performance fuel source is Hydrogen obtained from water, H20, there are
quite a few people that claim to have worked it out. It'd cost you
nothing to fill your car up with high octane fuel! I see it as just a
matter of time.
