Adam,
Whoever told you to connect 12v to the yellow wire doesn't care for your
well being too much. What that does is create a good fuel heater and an even
better detonator when your tank gets low and the sender is exposed to the
volatile fuel/air mix.

The 1600 dash gets it power from Pin 6 (green) which is connected to the
turn signal circuit and that's why the gauges work only with Ignition on.
12v goes directly to the Temp & Fuel gauge via a resister wire that heats a
bi-metallic strip that is earthed through another resistor on the sender
units. The voltage at the sender units is a matter of millivolts - around 3
on a 1600.

regards
Terry (I hope this gets read in time or the fuel gauge sender has already
been fried)

Subject: Fuel Gauge power.

When I disconnected the power to my dash I was told to reconnect pin 7
(yellow) as it is the power for the fuel gauge. I did this, to
12-14.4V, and it is definitely somehow connected to the fuel gauge but the
gauge always reads 3/4 full doesn't matter how much fuel there is. Is this
supposed to be a 5V supply line or is it an Earth wire? Or is my gauge
stuffed.
