I am currently running a factory L18EFI in my 1600. It uses a D-Jetronic
(recently discovered it is not an L-Jet as was we were lead to believe)
engine management system. This system is stock and on the original
engine. It provides excellent low down torque, no flat spots but doesn't
seem to rise much in power after about 4000 rpm. This may be due to the
small 40mm throttle body or maybe the CAM profile and small inlets. I am
using the original fuel pump and pressure regulator. On hot days I
experience severe heat soak issues with the fuel rail that result in the
fuel vapourising in the rail whenever I become stationary (note: the car
is not running hot - newish triple core radiator). I feel that a higher
flow fuel pump may reduce this problem, if it can replace evaporated fuel
faster than it evaporates. When I had dizzy problems I couldn't just
replace it with another as the system requires the extra breaker points
to tell the computer when to fire the injectors. The loom was not that
difficult to figure out. Injector plugs will only fit injectors and the
leads line up on the correct injector based on length. Other sensors will
only fit the correct plug, and with my system it has one wire that
connects to the starter to tell the computer to enrich the mixture during
startup. The D-Jetronic computer has to be bolted solidly to the body (or
an earth strap fitted) before the car will run (as we found out the first
time we tried to start it). The only tricky wiring was establishing the
power and fuel pump control signals and wiring through relays.
That's all the things I can think of that have caused me trouble with
mine. Pretty reliable except for the heat soak and earlier distributer
bush eating episode that I had.
