thanks for that - it is indeed what I have done (surgery to the
warning light surround) but I hadn't thought to use the clock loom
for illumination. So the factory clock had backlighting too only
when headlights were on?? (I have never seen one working..... :)
I have installed a matching tacho/speedo pair from a mazda of all
things :) the gauges are big, clear and fill the instrument panel
spots like they were designed for it. the speedo's ratio is within
0.1% of the original, so requires no changes also!! plus they are of
the modern opaque type therefore will be backlit properly just like a
modern vehicle. few hassles with fitment (as with anything). can
post some pics if anyone is interested.....
