Guys,

I went and spoke to Chris Milton Engine Developments (prominent Adelaide
performance shop) today and they told me they have just rebuilt a RB30ET for
a customer, and were unable to source RB30ET pistons from ACL, they had to
use ~flattops (from a VG30 I believe) ACL basically do not want to know
anything about applications which might cause them problems, ie forced
induction. Milton's agreed that it was a good point to try and use pistons
from a factory turbo motor due to the fact that they would be designed to
withstand boost straight out of the box, but said that there wouldn't really
be much benefit over N/A cast pistons given that even if you went to the
greater expense of using a factory piston (no ACL stuff available) from a
different manufacturer/motor and modifying it to suit, you'd probably damage
both types (hole one/drop a ring/otherwise) in practically the same time if
mistreated. From talking to Andrew Smith about his suck-through 300hp+ L20b
turbo that he runs stock ACL cast pistons in with 25psi of boost, it seems
that the most cost effective (ie sensible) option is to use stock cast
pistons (which are only $215 RRP with moly rings from ACL for a 4 cylinder)
and spend lots of time and effort on tuning & controlling detonation (which
really should be done anyway of course!)

That's all the info I've put together so far, it'd be really good to hear
other thoughts too!

Cheers,

- Tom
