No problem with using the Hitachi IR alternator on a 1600, however some of
them require an IN4004 diode to be fitted in the field line to get the dash
light to work properly. You don't need the diode for the alternator to work,
only if you want the light to operate correctly. All the diode does is stop
the 12v sense from changing direction (polarity) when the alternator starts
charging.

Another alternator that should work is from the R31 which are easy to find,
high output as EFI production engines have ~60 amp alternators.

engine.
