Nat,
For $273 what did you have done at cranky's?
I have just had my head done there and the bill was $670. I now have new
valves, seats and guides plus associated machining work. Realise that they
are a machining shop and not an engine builder. They do not do engine
assembly. Final cleaning is up to you. It says this on every invoice.
Your bolts should have been alright otherwise why did you use them?
Cam towers are only meant to be torqued to around 8-10ft/lb. My torque
wrench doesn't measure this low so I use a spring balance (like from and old
fruit and veg shop) and a one ft bar with socket. Alt just use a spanner but
don't over tighten. Remember the hard steel bolt is going into soft alloy.
So if you over torque the bolt you will strip the alloy thread in the head.
The threads in the head can be fixed by helicoiling.
Remember to install the cam towers with their appropriate dowel. It is my
policy not to change the dowel position in the head. If you don't then the
cam towers will be out of alignment when the cam goes in. Leading to broken
cams or damaged towers down the track.
Been there broken that before!
Regards
Trev

Nat are you talking the cam tower bolts or the cylinder head bolts?
Where the cam towers on the head when you got it back?
What did they actually do for the $273, crack test, surface grind, valve
grind and ????
When you say got it back in pieces, hadn't they re-installed the valves,
springs and retainers or just not the cam shaft and cam towers?
They want that head back tonight.... through their front window that is
