Yep, the light should be on cause you would have no oil pressure
before you crank, also the light should come on or flicker when the car is
really cold( very low revs below 800). If the light doesn't work check the
oil pressure sender unit on the block and then the wiring from the sender to
the dash, should be easily fixed!
