Eric if I understand your situation your real immediate problem seems to be
what struts have you got, so you can buy a replacement disc. Fix this and
you have your Falcon beater (I assume the gas fired L18 engine is going OK
now after repairs following the bolt swallowing). Five stud struts usually
have pretty large brakes so this is probably good news. This will keep you
on the road for the minimum additional cost. The engineering cost is
mandatory, so you have to wear it. If your thinking you might as well do
the engine swap for the same engineering cost, I think its a mistake. Use
the money you've already spent on the L series for a while.
Then when you have a roadworthy legal car, think about power upgrade.
The SR enthusiasts can tell you how much it cost to convert - you might be
able to deduct front brakes as your may be OK for the SR - its not usually
required to change the rears. Plus the petrol conversion of course. The
additional engineering cost will be petty cash compared to the engine swap
costs.
