I couldn't get my R.E. head gasket to reliably seal either.

I gave up,and am just ruuning a std gasket on my
12.5:1 L20B. Holding together fine.

Reports from people running metal HGs sucessfully
indicate you may need to mirror polish the sealing
surfaces

How about just running a stack of 2 or 3
standard HGs to get your CR drop? Possibly with
al aluminium shim between them.
