Subject: RE: L series exhaust
Hi
James,
I
was AWOL yesterday but I see there's been some good advice from others
posted mean time.
You
have to restrain the exhaust pipe at least in front of the rear x-member as
close to the hole as you can and it has to be flexible enough to allow
for the movement in the exhaust pipe as the engine moves around a fair
bit on it's mounts etc. and you'd be surprised how much room you need between
the pipe and the hole. If the pipe is held rigid then it will resonate which
is nearly as bad as hitting - you end up with a nervous twitch by Goulburn on
a run to Sydney. I use a truck quality clamp which the flexi
insulator is made out of what looks like leather and anchored to the
x-member in the standard holes. I tried some cheap ones and they lasted
no time at all until the insulator came away, 4 cylinder engines from the
70's do vibrate a lot. The standard exhaust system on a 1600 was only
anchored just in front of the x-member and it had rubber ring hangers
either side of the rear muffler so it wasn't restrained all that
much to begin with. Some ppl have added supports near the trannie but
with 4-2-1 headers this isn't easy to do as the collector on mine ends well
past the trannie x-member.
regards
Terry
So
Terry
if i were to
put a 2 1/4 through the rear cross member, how do i stop it from moving
around and making a racket?
cheers
