If the pipe is held rigid then it will resonate which is nearly as bad as hitting - you end up with a nervous twitch by Goulburn on a run to Sydney. I use a truck quality clamp which the flexi insulator is made out of what looks like leather and anchored to the x-member in the standard holes. I tried some cheap ones and they lasted no time at all until the insulator came away, 4 cylinder engines from the 70's do vibrate a lot.
