Torque is calculated from mean effective pressure (that being
the average cylinder pressure at combustion) and capacity. The number of pistons
and configuration would only effect this in as much as more efficient breathing
might improve the MEF.
V6 or V8 engines would deliver a smoother torque output than a
four though.
