That could probably be resolved with a big capacitor and a diode strategicly placed to stop the capacitor draining its charge away when the supply voltage drops. This would however introduce a half volt drop across the diode when the supply voltage is high enough to foward bias the diode ie. Battery voltage > than capacitor voltage. As long as the cap was big enough / low voltage period short enough / computer not use too much current, this would sustain a high enough voltage to retain the configuration within the computer. This wouldn't be a concept that is only associated with one type of computer, but one type or another may be more sensitive to low volts.
